The R&D Scientist develops new materials and processes, recommends and evaluates new instrumentation and techniques for material property characterization, and supports the Manufacturing function in new product scale up as well as trouble-shooting and process improvement.

  • Leads designated R&D projects and activities according to the annual R&D Plan, with the overall goal of developing new products and processes, improving or better documenting existing products and processes, providing science and technology support to other departments within CCT, and enhancing the scientific capabilities of the organization as a whole.
  • Evaluates novel technologies and materials, including phase change materials (PCMs), high performance thermal insulation, refrigerant films/containers, and refrigerant gels/foams.
  • Designs and executes R&D experiments to develop new materials or improve existing ones, which includes general and CCT-specific experimental techniques:
  • Thermal and physical property characterization, e.g. calorimetry, thermal conductivity, rheological/viscosity profiles, solids content, syneresis measurement
  • Chamber/validator programming, wiring of thermocouples and/or pack out of thermal shipping systems.
  • Weighing, mixing, and gelling/curing formulated compositions.
  • Analyzes and communicates scientific results:
  • Maintains a detailed laboratory notebook, analyzes raw data using statistics as well as applying more complex software-assisted analysis and CCT-specific calculation tools
  • Writes protocols, reports and presentations, often covering complex technical issues, that communicate results and conclusions clearly and concisely
  • May co-author or present materials such as white papers, trade show presentations, papers in scientific journals
  • Through example and guiding the performance of others, safely maintains a state-of-the-art laboratory where there is effective sharing of space and equipment, including
  • Ensures assigned areas and activities are compliant with all safety guidelines and CCT’s 5S procedure including Safety Data Sheet file and inventory listing
  • Introduces new R&D laboratory equipment and procedures, including recommending and evaluating new test instruments, ensures the general maintenance and upkeep, writes SOPs and trains new users
  • Performs experiments independently as well as supervises the work of interns or technical staff as needed
  • Procures laboratory, chemicals and supplies
  • Supports CCT Manufacturing in a scientific/technical role
