Cold Chain Technologies (CCT) is pleased to offer its customers KoolDesigns, the most efficient, accurate predictive thermal modeling service available in the cold chain market. KoolDesigns, which was developed by CCT in collaboration with Maya Heat Transfer Technologies, LTD., accomplishes the complex task of advanced predictive thermal modeling by accurately and expeditiously accounting for conduction, convection, phase change, and radiation.

Conduction is properly modeled routinely by applying many standard finite element methods. However, properly and accurately simulating phase change and convection are much more complex problems requiring advanced analytical techniques.

Phase Change - Proper simulation of phase change is critical to accurately modeling thermal packaging design. KoolDesigns models the non-linear thermal behavior of all phase change materials (dry ice, water based, hydrated salts, or organic oils and fats). Unlike methods based on temperature varying specific heat, KoolDesigns incorporates an enthalpy-based formulation for computing the energy balance in control volumes that are changing phase. This approach yields accurate results even for very large time steps and temperature changes.

Convection - KoolDesigns uniquely quantifies the overall effect of convection, in contrast to other (incomplete) thermal models that only account for conduction. Convection, which plays an important role in robust thermal packaging design, is quantified by employing KoolDesigns coupled "Finite Difference Control Volume (FDCV)/Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)" method.

Modeling/Solution Efficiency - KoolDesigns allows both modeling and solution efficiency through use of its concise/efficient meshing techniques and its coupled thermal/flow solver. Specifically long transient profiles (5 days or more) can be simulated within a reasonable solve time (e.g., 4 to 12 hours).
